Return of Festive Fun for Carols in the Square

With everyone on a countdown to the big day, Shrewsbury’s annual Carols in the Square concert returns next week.

The ever popular festive event will take place on Wednesday [DEC 15] from 5.30pm with music for all the family.

Shrewsbury Town Council is organising the concert, which will be broadcast live on BBC Radio Shropshire hosted by Adam Green and Clare Ashford from 6.05pm.

Music will be provided by Shrewsbury Brass Band with members of Shrewsbury Male Voice Choir leading the crowds with renditions of classic Christmas carols including O Little Town of Bethlehem, Ding Dong Merrily on High and Jingle Bells.

The concert will also be available to watch on-line thanks to Shrewsbury-based company, MicroVideo, with live-streaming via https://carolsinthesquare.com/

Helen Ball, town clerk for Shrewsbury Town Council, said: “This is always one of our favourite events and brings something special to Shrewsbury in the run up to Christmas.

“We have been looking forward to Carols in the Square this year, particularly since it has become the epicentre to Doorstep Carols, which is being broadcast around the country. And we are also starting to see our traditional events return to our calendar.

“Having balanced everyone’s keenness for this event to take place against any public health risk, we are taking every effort to make this event safe. Christmas Lights Switch-on recently showed how considerate people were of everyone and there is no reason why we can’t do the same for Carols.

“We do, though, need the public to attend sensibly and cautiously, following all existing COVID rules around wearing masks, good hygiene and socially distancing themselves wherever possible. We ask that everyone has a lateral flow test that day and if they have any COVID symptoms to stay away and listen to the broadcast on BBC Radio Shropshire.

“Special thanks must go to our sponsors, Veolia, for their continued support in helping us to stage this popular festive event and also to MicroVideo for live streaming the concert for those unable to attend.

To allow the Carols in the Square event to be held safely, there will be road closures in place on High Street, Wyle Cop (NW direction) & Princess Street, which will be closed from 4.30pm until around 7.30pm.

The Square will be closed all day, from 8am until around 7.30pm.

There will be free parking from 3pm at Abbey Foregate and Frankwell car parks.

Shrewsbury Shopping Centres, as well as many of the town’s independent retailers, will be open until 8pm. The Market Hall will also remain open until 8pm with the live music relay from the Square and complimentary mulled wine and mince pies, subject to proof of a purchase from stallholders, whilst stocks last.
