Shrewsbury Caterpillar Staff Help Local Youth Community Project

Staff from Shrewsbury firm Caterpillar Defense spent last Friday helping the local community as part of their annual community project.

Working alongside staff from Shrewsbury Town Council’s Youth Services, they helped to refurbish the facilities at The Grange Youth Centre on Mount Pleasant Road.

Adam Purnell, youth and community development worker for Shrewsbury Town Council, said: “The building at The Grange has been in need of redecorating for some time and it is great that so many people can work together to improve the condition of the building for our young people.

“We wouldn’t have been able to carry out the extensive work required to bring the facilities up to the standards needed for our youth sessions without the help of the staff from Caterpillar.  It will be great to have everything sorted out for the start of our new sessions in early September and I’m sure that our young people will be thrilled with the work that has been done for them.

“We’re looking forward to relaunching as a Youth and Community Centre and encouraging local people to come in and use the facilities here.”

Lucy Francis, HR Manager from Caterpillar Defense, added: “We are delighted to be able to help with the revamp of The Grange Youth Centre, and our staff thoroughly enjoyed the day.  We are proud to support our local community and like to put something back into our local area.

“We would like to thank the staff from Shrewsbury Town Council who have enabled us to take part in this community project.  The BBQ food provided by Adam Purnell, wearing his “Shropshire Lad” hat, was a great treat for everyone taking part in the work.”

Young Shrewsbury, the youth service provided by Shrewsbury Town Council, supports young people aged 11 to 19 through six different open access youth projects across the town and offers a wide range of activities and workshops.

Whilst also supporting young people at clubs in the town, the service provides a team of detached workers to work with youths who are on the streets, in parks and open spaces to try and build relationships with them and provide them with support and guide them towards the variety of activities on offer with a view to taking them off the streets.
