Monkmoor Meadows Public Consultation

An exciting new project is underway to enhance the ecological value and improve access provision at Monkmoor Meadows in Shrewsbury.

Monkmoor Meadows is a 10ha site in the Monkmoor area of Shrewsbury. It covers the expanse of grassland from the Monkmoor Community Woodland in the south to the underpass of the A49 in the north. The site is owned and maintained by Shrewsbury Town Council, and is grazed annually by cattle. It is a popular public greenspace for local residents, dog walkers and anglers, and is also passed through by walkers on the long-distance Severn Way walking trail.

Coalport-based landscape architecture and ecology consultants, Red Kite Network Limited have been appointed by Shropshire Wildlife Trust to prepare a feasibility study and masterplan for the site. The final proposals will be submitted as part of an application to the European Regional Development Fund in the new year.

The project will aim to enhance the biodiversity value and natural flood management of the Monkmoor Meadows. Pete Lambert, River Projects Manager at Shropshire Wildlife Trust, said: “The greenspaces along the Severn in Shrewsbury offer some of the best opportunities to directly encounter wildlife whether feather, fin or paw. We feel that the Monkmoor Meadows might be able to offer more for people and wildlife than it does now and we are very keen to hear local views on the future care of this popular riverside space.”

Matt Wilcoxon, Countryside and Greenspace Team Leader at Shrewsbury Town Council, added: “This is an ideal opportunity to enhance a large area of open space for both wildlife and people. The location of the land, on the edge of town and next to the river, gives it great potential for improvement.”

Red Kite will be facilitating public consultation in the coming weeks to gather views for the project from the local community and stakeholder groups. Local residents are being invited to complete an online survey (https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/6ZNT6FM) and to attend a drop-in session at Crowmoor Baptist Church on the morning of Friday 15th December.
