Greenfields Recreation Ground

Following a motion unanimously agreed by Shrewsbury Town Council on 18 May 2020, an independent investigation has commenced into the sale of land on Greenfields Recreation Ground in 2017.

The investigation follows a Judicial Review and subsequent Public Interest Report from the Town Council’s external auditor which identified “serious governance failings within Shrewsbury Town Council” in regards to them failing to establish the legal status of the land and hence, not publically advertising their proposal to sell.

The Town Council has commissioned the investigation as ‘we have a responsibility to make sure that lessons are identified and actions are taken as a consequence’.

The investigation is being undertaken by Michael Redfern QC; Mr Redfern is a vastly experienced barrister acclaimed for his work on cases involving catastrophic brain injury, including claims involving RTAs and employers’ liability issues. He has been given a comprehensive brief and his investigations will include discussions with Shrewsbury Town Council councillors, officers, members of the Greenfields community and other relevant parties.

The investigation commenced on August 3 and Mr Redfern will report back on his findings at a publicly accessible meeting of the Town Council in the autumn.
