Card Design Earns School Blooming Great Prize

Budding young gardeners at a Shrewsbury school were presented with a special prize after coming first in a horticultural-themed competition.

Pupils at the Wilfred Owen School, based at Monkmoor, designed a Christmas card that was deemed pick of the crop by Shrewsbury in Bloom which ran the competition as part of its Get Schools Blooming education programme.

Chairman of Shrewsbury in Bloom, Councillor Jackie Brennand, visited Wilfred Owen last Friday [FEB 10] to present pupils with their prize – a floral planter – and a certificate.

Mrs Brennand, a former school teacher, said: “We developed the Bloom educational programme to encourage local school children to get passionate about gardening and we are delighted to see how well everyone has been doing. Special congratulations must go to Wilfred Owen for completing such a wonderful card design.”

Get Schools Blooming is an interactive, online learning resource for local primary schools. It was launched last summer and six schools have already signed up to the programme.

Schools that register for the scheme will receive a free starter pack and can also work towards rewards and certificates by achieving benchmark criteria.

The educational resource has been developed by Shrewsbury in Bloom, which is the body responsible for developing and maintaining Shrewsbury’s floral enhancement, environmental improvements and community projects.

Schools must be within the Shrewsbury area to apply and only one registration per primary school is permitted.
