Carols in the Square

Shrewsbury’s annual Carols in the Square concert, which will be broadcast live on BBC Radio, returns next week.

The popular festive event will take place on Wednesday [DEC 12] from 5.30pm with music for all the family.

Shrewsbury Town Council is managing the concert, which will be broadcast live on BBC Radio Shropshire hosted by Eric Smith from 6.05pm.

To get everyone in the festive mood, there will be music from Shrewsbury Brass Band and Shrewsbury Male Voice Choir as they lead the crowds with renditions of classic Christmas carols including Hark the Herald Angels Sing, Silent Night and Away in a Manger.

The concert will also be available to watch on-line thanks to Shrewsbury-based company, Microvideo, with live-streaming via

In case people can’t make it to the Square, the concert will also be broadcast inside Shrewsbury Market Hall where all the action from the main stage will be relayed via large TV screens.

To allow the Carols in the Square event to be held safely, there will be road closures in place on High Street, Wyle Cop (NW direction) & Princess Street, which will be closed from 4.30pm until around 7.30pm.

The Square will be closed all day, from 8am until around 7.30pm.

There will be free parking from 3pm at Abbey Foregate and Frankwell car parks, whilst Raven Meadows multi-storey carpark has 50% off parking from 3pm.  To ease any potential congestion in the town centre, there will also be free Park & Ride from 12pm until 9pm.

Shrewsbury Shopping Centres, as well as many of the town’s independent retailers, will be open until 8pm. The Market Hall will also remain open until 9pm with live music and complimentary mulled wine and mince pies, subject to proof of a purchase from stallholders, whilst stocks last.
