Final Call for Mayor’s Awards

A final call is being made for nominations for the 2011 Mayor of Shrewsbury Awards.

Applications are invited in a variety of categories and are open to anyone whose achievements have benefitted the town of Shrewsbury. This is the last chance to get nominations in before the closing date on March 31.

The Mayor’s Awards are returning following the success of the inaugural 2010 event which celebrated the achievements of organisations, groups, businesses and individuals in the town.

Categories include;

Business Award – acknowledges the work of businesses, organisations and individuals who have contributed to the economy of the town, whether through providing job opportunities, business expansion or general promotion and marketing of the town.

There are four categories:

• Larger Employers (over 50 employees)

• Small Employers (under 50 employees)

• Not-for-Profit Organisations

• Young Entrepreneur

Environmental Award – recognises the work of organisations, community groups and individuals who have contributed to enhancing the environment from major recycling initiatives to organising minor litter picking events.

There are two categories:

• Environmental Category

• Tidy Shrewsbury Category

Community Award – acknowledges the work of community groups and individuals who have contributed to the social well-being of the town from major community projects to someone who looks out for residents and does their shopping.

There are three categories:

• Group Category

• Individual Category

• Volunteer Category

Youth Award – recognises the work of schools, groups and individuals who have contributed to the well-being of young people within the town.

There are three categories:

• Schools Category

• Group Category

• Individual Category

Built Heritage Award – open to individuals, organisations and companies that own buildings in Shrewsbury and have worked towards enhancing the built heritage.

There are two categories:

• Single Dwellings, Conversions and Minor Works Category

• Commercial or Residential Developments and Major Schemes Category

In addition to these five categories, which will be judged by a panel of members and officers of the Town Council, the Mayor, Councillor Kath Owen, will also present her special Commendation Award.

This is an award that is personal to the Mayor and is presented to a person/persons she has met throughout her Mayoral Year who has/have made a significant contribution to the town.

Councillor Owen said: “This is the last chance for people to get their entries in for this year’s awards so get nominating! I look forward to hearing all about people’s various achievements and to meeting the winners at the awards ceremony in May.”

Application forms for each category are available to download from the Town Council website at www.shrewsburytowncouncil.gov.uk or in hard copy from the Mayor’s Secretary at the Guildhall.
