Dana Footpath Moves One Step Nearer

The long-held aspirations of developing an accessible link between the Dana Footpath and Castle Street moved a step further last night [MON] when members of Shrewsbury Town Council’s Finance & General Purpose Committee agreed to allocate £50,000 in its capital programme to finance the works.

Town Councillors Alan Mosley and Andrew Bannerman have been working with Town Council staff and Conservation & Estates Officers at Shropshire Council to develop a workable, acceptable and affordable route around the front of the gardens that would provide a more level access for people with mobility difficulties, wheelchairs, shopping trolleys and push chairs rather than trying to navigate the steep flight of steps onto Castle Street.

The new link will also bring the Castle into greater prominence and add greatly to the attraction of the route which is well-used by residents and visitors alike.

Officers have met with Historic England who have shown enough support for the proposals that a formal application for Scheduled Ancient Monument Consent and Planning Permission will be issued shortly.

Speaking about the proposals which many of his residents in Castlefields have been long-campaigning for Councillor Alan Mosley said: “I am delighted that money has been set aside for this valuable walkway.  It will mean that people will be able to get in and out of the town centre more easily than currently.  This project is an excellent example of both Shropshire Council and Shrewsbury Town Council working well together”.

Councillor Andrew Bannerman also welcomed the Town Council’s investment. “For many years the Town Council has looked after the grounds of the Castle and this investment supports the justified aspiration of the community and will encourage more people to enjoy the garden and Castle grounds”.

In addition to this investment the Town Council will also provide grounds maintenance support to help further enhance the garden.
