Shrewsbury to Fly the Flag for Olympics and Jubilee
Shrewsbury’s streets are set to be awash with colour to celebrate the passing of the Olympic torch through the town, and the Queen’s Jubilee, thanks to the town’s Bloom committee.
The group, which is the driving force behind Shrewsbury’s success in the annual Heart of England in Bloom competition, has commissioned 250 specially designed flags which are available, free of charge, to businesses within the town centre who purchase one or more of Town Council’s summer hanging baskets.
So far more than 120 flags/baskets have been ordered by businesses including the Market Hall, Boots, Write Here and House of Fraser.
The flags feature three carefully chosen designs that can be reused for future events and celebrations in the town. One shows the Union Jack, one bears the town’s Floreat Salopia crest and the third displays the Mayor’s Pride in Shrewsbury logo. One free flag is being offered per hanging basket ordered.
Flags will be installed late May, with baskets following in the first two weeks of June.
Both will be collected at the end of September.
Baskets are priced at £39.99 each, which includes installation, removal and watering throughout the season.
Flags can only be issued where a Town Council approved flag holder is present.
Councillor Jackie Brennand, chairman of Shrewsbury in Bloom said: “In recognition of the Queen’s Jubilee and the Olympics this year Shrewsbury in Bloom has funded the production of 250 celebratory flags which will be offered free of charge to business purchasing one or more of the Town Council’s summer hanging baskets. What better way to be part of the patriotic celebrations than the fly the flag for Shrewsbury!”
