Deputy Mayor

Deputy Mayor of Shrewsbury
Councillor Tony Durnell
Tony was born just outside Shrewsbury in the village of Ford, he attended Ford Church of England School until the age of 8 before the family moved to Tankerville Street, for two years, attending Crowmoor School, before moving back to Ford and attending Pontesbury Secondary Modern School.
He completed an apprenticeship in agricultural engineering and spent many years working all over the UK as well as overseas, before joining Eden Vale at Minsterley in 1989 in the engineering department. During his career he continued his studies obtaining diplomas in Health and Safety, Company Law as well as vocational studies, which have enabled successes in representing people at tribunals.
He is married to Tricia, they have five children between them from previous marriages and a football team of grandchildren.
Suffering a serious back injury in 1999 meant early retirement from the workplace, but as one door closed others opened enabling an ambition to help the community through the volunteering sector, something that will always be close to his heart. Tricia is a volunteer with the WRVS Meals on Wheels service.
Both believing in lifelong learning and having the time to do it, Tricia obtained a 2.1 in Fine Art at Wolverhampton University whilst Tony completed the Royal Horticultural Society advanced course in Horticulture at Walford and North Shropshire College.
In October 2005 Tony was elected as a Councillor for the Monkmoor Ward on the former Shrewsbury & Atcham Borough Council, and is now a Town Councillor for Shrewsbury as well as the Unitary Councillor on Shropshire Council for Monkmoor. He is a Governor at the Belvidere Modern School.
